“An impressive coming of age tale perfectly suited to the current age” -- Lisa Nesselson, Screen Daily
“Shot with the kineticism of bodies in motion, the sensitivity of an early Céline Sciamma film, and the foreboding seductiveness of a hidden fantasy world in which dreams and danger seem to go hand-in-hand...” -- David Ehrlich, Indiewire
“A searing account of athleticism and abuse.” -- Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter
New York, NY, January 13, 2020 – Kino Lorber announced that it has acquired U.S. rights for French writer and director Charlène Favier’s stunning debut feature SLALOM starring Noée Abita and Jérémie Renier set to release in Spring 2021. The provocative and sensitive coming-of-age film premiered as part of Cannes 2020’s official selection.
SLALOM centers on 15-year-old Lyz (Abita), a high school student in the French Alps, who has been accepted to a highly selective ski club that trains future professional athletes. Fred (Renier), an ex-champion turned coach, takes a chance on training her as a new recruit, and slowly makes Lyz his shining star. As she racks up success under his influence, Lyz has to endure the physical and emotional pressure of elite training and figure out how to escape the mental and physical grip of power and abuse from a predatory coach.
SLALOM was negotiated by Kino Lorber SVP Wendy Lidell and The Party Film Sales Co-head Samuel Blanc.
Kino Lorber President and CEO Richard Lorber said, “Slalom may thrill with hyper ski action but it wins the cinematic race for its dizzying skid into innocence abused. The true cost of a teen girl’s mastery of icy slopes rises to heart pulsing metaphorical heights in director Charlène Favier’s astonishing debut film. We can’t wait to share our discovery with audiences across America.”
SLALOM will be released in Spring 2021, followed by a VOD release on Kino Now and home video.
