New York, NY – April 14, 2020 – Kino Lorber announced today that the upcoming documentary CAPITAL IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY, will now be released nationally on May 1, 2020 via the groundbreaking virtual cinema platform Kino Marquee. The film was originally scheduled to kick off a nationwide theatrical rollout on April 3. Kino Marquee is a new, innovative platform that partners with theaters to virtually premiere Kino Lorber theatrical films. The release of Capital In The Twenty-First Century follows the successful Kino Marquee expansions of Bacurau and Sorry We Missed You, demonstrating the viability of the platform as a way to reach audiences, with more than 200 art-house theaters now participating. Additionally, on Sunday May 3rd, Economist Thomas Piketty will participate in a national virtual online conversation with notable experts.
Directed by Justin Pemberton, CAPITAL IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY is a feature documentary that explores one of the most important, controversial and timely subjects of our time, economic inequality. Based on the international bestseller by rock-star economist Thomas Piketty, the captivating documentary is an eye-opening journey through wealth and power, a film that breaks the popular assumption that the accumulation of capital runs hand in hand with social progress, and shines a new light on today’s growing inequalities. Traveling through time, the film assembles accessible pop-culture references coupled with interviews of some of the world’s most influential experts delivering an insightful, entertaining, and empowering journey through the past and into our future.
Kino Lorber's Richard Lorber (CEO) said, “Capital in the Twenty-First Century is an eye- popping amalgam of movie clips with visionary commentary that elucidates Thomas Piketty’s award winning analysis of socio-economic injustice in the world today. We are proud to be launching this film with virtual theater partners across North America through our newly- launched Kino Marquee platform. Audiences can buy tickets that support now shuttered local theaters but will be able to see the film digitally in the social distance safety of their homes. In the spirit of Piketty’s message we hope this may re-distribute a share of income to many small independent film venues instead of all flowing to the corporate coffers of giant VOD’ ers. With income and wealth inequality so much at the forefront of political discussion we believe the convergence of the content of “Capital" and our new form of distribution will awaken more people to choices shaping a better outcome in the elections to come."
Director Justin Pemberton added, "I'm excited Capital In the Twenty-First Century is part of the innovative KinoMarquee initiative. It’s great to know the film will soon get to audiences as it seems people are thinking more about compassionate ways to reorganise the economy as this new shock takes hold. Thomas was adamant he wanted the film to be as much about history as the present and near future, as that’s where the insights lie. My take is that history doesn’t repeat so much as rhyme."
