Kino Lorber Announces the Launch of Sol y Luna, a New Home Media Label Focused on Spanish-Language Films

  • New York, NY -- March 4, 2016 -- Kino Lorber is proud to announce the creation of a new home media label dedicated to the release of Spanish-language films in the US and Canada. Named Sol y Luna (Sun and Moon), this new label from Kino Lorber will distribute a broad range of Spanish-language films, from high quality commercial entertainment to award winning Hispanic cinema, to all home media channels in the US and Canada.

Curating this collection from filmmakers in key producing countries throughout Latin America, the Sol Y Luna team will bring to light a fresh array of films for growing Latino audiences and art house film buffs alike.

The label begins with three acclaimed new titles, now set for a DVD release on May 24, 2016: Jaula de Oro (The Golden Dream), directed by Diego Quemada-Díez, Preludio, written and directed by Eduardo Lucatero, and Sobre Ella, written and directed by Mauricio T Valle. Jaula de Oro, which was filmed in gorgeous Super 16mm, won over 80 international film awards, including the “A Certain Talent” prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.

"The demand for Spanish language entertainment in the US is greater than ever and Kino Lorber is well-positioned to both acquire and deliver films, through multiple channels, to an under-served but rapidly expanding Latino audience,” said Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber. “Sol Y Luna releases, as the name implies, will range from sunny comedies to dark dramas and even documentaries of powerful depth. As we enter the important Hispanic market our focus remains unwavering in our longstanding Kino Lorber commitment to independent visions and high quality entertainment."

Juan, Sara, and Samuel, three teenagers from the slums of Guatemala, travel to the United States in search of a better life. On their journey through Mexico, they meet Chauk, an Indian from Chiapas who doesn’t speak Spanish. Traveling together in freight trains and walking on railroad tracks, they soon have to face an odyssey that will change their lives forever.

In this intimate approach to filmmaking, a wannabe rock star and a chef meet at a party and what starts as a casual conversation becomes more profound as they open up to each other and talk about their fears, hopes and dreams. Everything happens in real time and in one single shot, while we see two human beings connecting on a very special level, opening up all kinds of possibilities.

For some, life is a party full of joy, music and dance. Sobre Ella  is just that: a colorful photograph, with textures, lights and shadows. This is the story of how we learn to comprehend destiny, friendship liaisons, the passion of loving and the joy of waking up every morning. Meet Ana, Daniel, Christian and Pía, a group of friends that have managed to stick together despite everyday problems. Until today, when an unexpected incident will change their lives forever.
