New York, NY – (April 2, 2021) -- Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber, two of the leading distribution companies for art-house and international films in the USA, have acquired all rights in North America for the new documentary film Against the Current, directed by Oskar Pall Sveinsson. The film will open theatrically on June 25, with a New York run at Quad Cinemas.

Against the Current profiles Veiga Gretarsdottir’s solo kayak expedition around the magical, rugged coastline of Iceland counter-clockwise and ‘against the current’ - a journey no less difficult than the decision she made at age 38 to no longer live as a man and to undergo gender reassignment. These two stories of conflict and struggle are intertwined as the film follows her amazing 2,000 kilometer journey (the equivalent of climbing K2) as a backdrop to the remarkable personal account of her transition.

Against the Current was negotiated by Zeitgeist Co-Presidents Nancy Gerstman and Emily Russo with Producers Kristin Olafsdottir and Petur Einarsson.

Gerstman and Russo said, “We are excited to start a new journey with our Icelandic producers Kristin Olafsdottir (Innsaei: The Power of Intuition) and Petur Einarsson who have created such an extraordinary story of accomplishment and defiance against all odds, but ultimately about love, acceptance, and being the person you feel yourself to be.  We expect this remarkable story will resonate with the wider LGBTQ community and anyone who finds the thrill in the exploration of the natural world.”

Producers Olafsdottir and Einarsson said, "We are thrilled to be working with Zeitgeist again to represent Against the Current in the US. We think our partnership will help bring our amazing film to the widest possible audience. The timing is right to share this beautiful Icelandic film with the world coinciding with an increased awareness and sympathy for trans rights."

Against the Current will be released theatrically  on June 25, 2021, followed by a digital release on Kino Now and home video.
