for Burhan Qurbani’s Berlin Alexanderplatz
German-Dutch epic drama is a modern day update of Alfred Döblin’s 1929 novel and world premiered at the 2020 Berlinale
New York, NY – (March 4, 2020) – Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights for Burhan Qurbani’s Berlin Alexanderplatz. The feature drama had its world premiere at Berlinale 2020. The film garnered awards in 2020 including Best Feature Film (Silver) and more at Stockholm International Film Festival, German Film Awards, and European Film Awards. Qurbani previously directed, We Are Young. We Are Strong (2014).
Kino Lorber has also partnered with the German Film Office to present a curated selection of new, award-winning films from Germany this spring and summer. The program, KINO! Germany NOW!, is curated by film writer and curator Alissa Simon and showcases films fresh from the international festival circuit for virtual and in-person screenings at festivals and arthouse cinemas in the U.S. It includes Berlin Alexanderplatz as one of its top new discoveries.
Berlin Alexanderplatz trails an African immigrant named Francis who struggles to make a new life for himself in Berlin with a fresh, modern neon-lit retelling and update of Alfred Döblin’s 1929 novel of the same name. After surviving his perilous journey, Francis vows to be on the right track, but soon realizes how difficult it is to be righteous while undocumented in Germany. Without papers, a work permit, and limited options to make money, he receives an enticing offer from an obsessive psychopathic gangster. While initially resistant, his life spirals out of control as he dives deeper into the city’s seedy underworld.
Berlin Alexanderplatz was negotiated by Kino Lorber President and CEO Richard Lorber and Beta Film’s CEO Dirk Schürhoff.
Lorber said, "Berlin Alexanderplatz confounds any expectations of a Fassbinder remake. It stands on its own as a fully re-imagined contemporary interpretation of Doblin’s book and is, plain and simple, a powerhouse that will electrify audiences. With its settings and characters that keep throwing off sparks, north american audiences will soon discover a thrilling cinematic inferno.”
Berlin Alexanderplatz will be released in March 2021, followed by a VOD release on Kino Now and home video.
