The Beggar Maid
Directed by Herbert Blaché
In 1920, Triart Pictures was formed to create films of everlasting value about art and their aritsts. With Herbert Blaché as director and Reginald Denny as scriptwriter and star, the studio chose inspiration from a painting called "King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid" by Edward Burne-Jones, itself inspired by the legend of the same name. The film follows the painter as he plays matchmaker for a nobleman (Denny) and a servant girl (Mary Astor), two lovers afeard of their social differences, until a day in Burne-Jones' studio crafts magic out of their affection. Heartfelt, regal and every bit as romantic as the day it was produced, THE BEGGER MAID returns to the home cinema screen with an original score by one Ben Model.
